Series Take Away
Gautam Gambhir became the head coach of India after the T20I World Cup 2024, taking over Rahul Dravid. Gambhir did tell that India would make bowling-friendly wickets to restore the culture of cricket where both bat and bowl meets at the level playing field.
However, the current India Test team is not good with spin as they used to be. As a result, India lost the Test series 3-0 at home and faced whitewash against New Zealand.
Even star players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma did not able to lead the team with bat in any of the game. This makes India’s chances of winning the World Test Championship harder.
Will Young became the player of the series as he did not perform well with the bat in all three games. This tells that Indian batsmen are not good with the spin as they were during Gautam Gambhir’s time.
So it seems as a big task for Gautam to make sure that new-age players can play the spin well as in T20I and ODI, they do not seem to have much problem.
Another reason as per expert is that due to batting-friendly wickets, anytime there is help for bowlers, the current players do not able to hold it well. So on the one side, they are good in limited overs cricket, but on the other hand, too poor in Test format.
And New Zealand playing spin better than India shows bigger concerns. For the away side, it was a historic series win. But for the home side, it was a very hard pill to take for captain Rohit Sharma.
India National Cricket Team vs New Zealand National Cricket Team Match Scorecard did show in all three games how wrose Indians are with spin. And as per many experts, present spinners are not as good as it used in be before.
Summary
Losing the Test series by 0-3 was something Indian cricket fans did not think before. New Zealand did shine with both bat and bowl and made sure that India would see a whitewash defeat.
It did show that Indians are not good with spin anymore and this makes others feel confident of beating India in India in Test matches and even looking for whitewash. And it does seem to be a major concern for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and in this series, they did not lead well.
