The Beginning (2008–2010): MI Dominance from the Start

Since the start of the IPL in 2008, Mumbai Indians (MI), with their strong batting order, have dominated the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in most matches.

  • 2008: In the very first season, MI won both matches against KKR. KKR continuously faced inconsistency,  while one of the most memorable moments came from Mumbai’s Sanath Jayasuriya, who scored an explosive 114 not out from just 48 balls at Wankhede Stadium.
  • 2009: In 2009, the IPL tournament shifted to South Africa, but the result did not change much. MI again won both matches against KKR. That year turned out to be a tough one for Kolkata as they finished at the bottom of the points table, whereas Mumbai continued to look strong.
  • 2010: KKR again lost both matches to MI. Mumbai had a powerful squad with legends like Sachin Tendulkar, fast bowler Lasith Malinga, and the hard-hitting Kieron Pollard, making them tough to beat.

By the end of 2010, the head-to-head stood heavily in favor of MI.

Rise of the Knight Riders (2011–2014)

The 2011 IPL mega-auction saw some big and good changes to the KKR squad. One of the biggest changes was bringing in Gautam Gambhir as captain. His bold attitude and smart leadership gave the team a new direction and confidence.

  • 2011: KKR finally won against Mumbai Indians. They won their first-ever match against MI in a tight game at Eden Gardens.
  • 2012: This year was a turning point for KKR. They once again defeated MI during the league stage. More importantly, under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy, KKR went on to win their first IPL trophy. It was a proud and historic season for the franchise.
  • 2013: In 2013, even though KKR had a decent squad, they lost both matches against MI. Rohit Sharma was the captain of MI and was in good form. MI had a strong season and ended up winning their first-ever IPL title that year.
  • 2014: The new season began on a high for KKR as they beat MI in the opening match held in the UAE. Jacques Kallis played a superb unbeaten inning of 72 runs, and Sunil Narine delivered a deadly bowling performance. That season turned out to be magical for KKR as they again lifted their second IPL trophy.

The Rohit Sharma Era (2015–2017): MI’s Dominance Reinforced

Mumbai Indians under Rohit Sharma captaincy have a head-to-head advantage over KKR and began to widen again during this phase.

  • 2015: MI defeated KKR in both matches, including the final match of the league stage. Players like Lendl Simmons, Hardik Pandya, and Rohit Sharma were central figures in these wins.
  • 2016: MI kept their winning record intact with two more wins over KKR. KKR’s consistent poor performance that season saw them unable to defeat Mumbai.
  • 2017: KKR lost both league matches to MI, and when they faced off in Qualifier 2, MI once again beat Kolkata. Karn Sharma’s 4-wicket haul completely disturbed the KKR batting order which helped MI to reach in the final and MI won for the third time.

This period saw MI emerge as KKR’s bogey team — no matter how well the Knight Riders played in the tournament, Mumbai always seemed to find a way to beat them.

The Mid-Season Shift (2018–2020): Searching for Balance

While MI remained a strong contender, KKR attempted to revamp their squad with players like Shubman Gill, Nitish Rana, and Dinesh Karthik and strategies post-Gambhir, while Andre Russell became a match-winner.

  • 2018: During 2018, Mumbai Indians continue to dominate KKR as they again won matches by beating Kolkata Knight Riders in both league matches and also in the eliminator.
  • 2019: In 2019, after a long time, KKR finally won a match against MI, this victory was registered at Eden Gardens. It was a big win for KKR and a proud moment for their fans.
  • 2020: Due to the pandemic, the IPL 2020 season was shifted to the UAE. And, MI once again beat KKR and finally went on to win their fifth IPL trophy. Moreover, MI won their fifth IPL trophy that season by beating DC.

2021–2023: Captain Changed, New Hopes

From 2021 to 2023, the match rivalry between KKR and MI became more balanced. Both teams were going through changes, KKR first played under Eoin Morgan and later under Shreyas Iyer. On the other hand, MI was also adjusting after some of their star players retired or were not in good form.

  • 2021: The second half of the season was shifted to the United Arab Emirates due to the pandemic. KKR finally broke their losing streak against MI during this time. Venkatesh Iyer made a strong debut and batted brilliantly to help KKR win a crucial match. That year, KKR reached the final and had a better season than MI.
  • 2022: This year, both teams won one match each. In the first game, Pat Cummins surprised everyone by hitting a fifty in just 14 balls and helped KKR win. But MI made a comeback in the next match, with Suryakumar Yadav playing a top-class innings to guide his team to victory.
  • 2023: KKR put on a brilliant show at Wankhede, with Venkatesh Iyer scoring a superb century. It was a big win for Kolkata. MI, however, bounced back at Eden Gardens where their batters worked together and won the match easily.

IPL 2024–2025: Young Talent vs Strong Legacy

In the last two seasons, the rivalry between KKR and MI has become even more exciting. MI brought back Hardik Pandya as captain in 2024 and had some ups and downs. KKR, under Shreyas Iyer and with Gautam Gambhir returning as mentor, looked sharper and more focused.

  • 2024: KKR defeated MI in both matches as they had a strong team including players like Rinku Singh, Nitish Rana, and Sunil Narine. However, MI’s younger players showed potential but could not handle KKR’s spinners.
  • 2025 (Latest Match): The most recent match was played at Eden Gardens in front of a packed crowd. KKR batted first and scored 192/5, with Rinku Singh playing a fine innings of 66. Moreover, MI chased the target with a calm partnership between Tilak Varma and Tim David. They won the game with just two balls left. Jasprit Bumrah performed well with the ball and took 3 wickets for 21 runs, and became the Player of the Match.

This latest match showed that both teams have the skill and power to beat each other, and their rivalry continues to grow stronger with every season.
