Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals Timeline

2008-2010: Rivalries in Early Years

As the IPL began in 2008, in the first few seasons, both teams were trying to find their identity. Delhi Daredevils had a team squad with players like Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, and AB de Villiers while Mumbai Indians were still building their core around Sachin Tendulkar.

  • 2008: In the first season, Delhi defeated Mumbai in both their league matches where Gautam Gambhir and Sehwag played crucial innings in those wins.
  • 2009: In 2009, the IPL was played in South Africa because of the general elections in India. In the one match, MI managed to beat Delhi but DC topped the league table that season.
  • 2010: With the form of Sachin Tendulkar, MI finally started asserting their dominance and beat Delhi in both games.

By the end of 2010, MI had begun their climb to becoming one of the most consistent IPL teams.

2011-2013: Rise of Mumbai

During this period, Mumbai Indians became a strong team with players like Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga and Later Ricky Ponting and Mitchell Johnson.

But Delhi had many highs and lows.

  • 2011: In 2011, Delhi lost both of their league matches against MI.
  • 2012: Again in the year 2012, both MI and Delhi were strong, but Delhi won both of their league matches with team players included Kevin Peterson and Mahela Jayawardhene.
  • 2013: In 2013, Mumbai Indians won a match at Wankhede Stadium by 44 runs. But Delhi made a strong comeback and won the next match by 9 wickets at Arun Jaitley Stadium.

2014-2017: Mumbai’s stronghold and win titles

In this phase, Delhi Daredevils entered a rebuilding phase after letting go of several key players. Although they experimented with many players but could not get the right team.

However, Mumbai kept getting stronger under Rohit Sharma and went on to win the titles in 2015 and 2017.

  • 2015: The first league match of that season won by MI by 5 wickets. However, DD bounced back and won in another match by 37 runs.
  • 2016-2017: Delhi started rebuilding their team with young players like Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer. But they still could not find the consistency and MI won again and again the matches in that season.

2018-2019: DD Rebranding

Though still called Delhi Daredevils, 2018 was their last season under that name.

Surprisingly, Delhi won both league matches against MI that season by their star performers like Rishabh Pant and Prithvi Shaw.

Even though Delhi did not qualify for playoffs, those wins over MI felt symbolic.

2019: A New Chapter as Delhi Capitals

In 2019, Delhi Daredevils became Delhi Capitals. The change of name brought new spirit to the team

MI defeated Delhi in both league matches and then again in Qualifier 1. Eventually, MI went on to win their fourth title that year.

2020: The IPL Final – MI vs DC

The IPL season 2020 was unique as it was played in the UAE due to a pandemic. That year saw the peak of MI vs DC rivalry.

  • Mumbai beat DC in both group stage matches. As the squad of MI was firing on all aspects with players like Quinton De Kock, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah.
  • Then in Qualifier 1, again MI beat Delhi and entered into the finals.
  • After it, the both teams faced off in the finals and MI defeated DC once again to lift their fifth IPL trophy.

Though Delhi lost in the finals, reaching the finals for the first time was a big achievement for their team.

2021: Another Competitive Season

In 2021, DC came into the tournament stronger by including fast bowlers like Avesh Khan and Anrich Nortje. They finished first in the league table but could not win in the playoffs.

In the league matches MI and DC won one match each. But this time MI failed to reach the playoffs which shocked their fans.

2022: Changing Fortunes

2022 was a year of transition. MI had one of their worst seasons, finishing last. Delhi, too, missed the playoffs by a narrow margin.

In their league matches, DC beat MI in the first match, but MI ended their campaign with a win over DC in their final league game. But, that win by Mumbai was very helpful for Royal Challengers Bangalore to qualify for the playoffs instead of DC.

2023: Delhi’s Decline, Mumbai’s Comeback

In 2023, the Mumbai Indians bounced back with the arrival of players like Cameron Green and Tilak Varma stepping up, and MI returned to their competitive best.

However, Delhi had a forgettable season as Rishabh Pant was out due to their car accident, and DC struggled without their key leader. That may be a reason that MI defeated DC in both league games.

2024-2025: The Current Phase

The most recent seasons have shown signs of another shift. Though Rohit Sharma’s leadership chapter has ended and now Mumbai Indians led by Hardik Pandya, are transitioning into a new era. However, Rohit still plays as a senior figure in the team.

Although Delhi Capitals are still finding their rhythm. Rishabh Pant returned in 2025 after a long recovery, giving a fresh boost to the squad.

  • 2024: Mumbai again had the better hand, beating Delhi in one of their group matches. DC, however, looked more stable with young Indian talent and overseas stars like David Warner and Mitch Marsh.
  • 2025: MI won by 12 runs against DC in which MI substitute player Karn Sharma took 3 wickets and played a crucial role in MI winning.

Notable Performances Over the Years

  • Rishabh Pant’s 64 vs MI in 2018 – Announced his arrival.
  • Rohit Sharma’s 68 in 2020 Final – A match-winning knock.
  • Trent Boult’s spells in the 2020 playoffs – Changed the game early on.
  • Jasprit Bumrah’s 4/14 in 2020 Qualifier – Vintage death bowling.
  • Lalit Yadav & Axar’s partnership in 2022 – Gave Delhi a shock win.

Final Words

The timeline of Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals is filled with ups and downs, dominance and comebacks, heartbreaks and hope. While Mumbai has enjoyed more success overall with five trophies and multiple playoff appearances, Delhi’s journey has been more of a late bloomer’s story.

The transformation over time makes this rivalry special, from one-sided contests to evenly fought duels. With both teams focusing on young Indian talent, the future of MI vs DC clashes looks promising, competitive, and full of surprises.
