Who Scored A Century In Just 3 Overs?
SHARE

Since sport is about taking your time, aiming perfectly and using poetry, nearly nothing happens as fast or with as much impact as some of these moments. On November 2, 1931, Sir Don Bradman scored 100 runs in a remarkable three overs (because the scoring in the game at that time used 8 balls per over). No player has reached the same record in official or semi-official competitive cricket.

It wasn’t a Test match or the final of the World Cup. Even so, cricket fans remember this innings as a huge demonstration of dominance.

From Blackheath to Lithgow District

It happened in New South Wales in a friendly but competitive hockey game in Australia. At twenty-three, Don Bradman had become a famous and talented batsman. He was performing for Blackheath against the Lithgow District XI at a fixture arranged to gain support of locals and highlight grassroots passion for cricket.

Unlike his famous Test matches at large venues, the match was played at the quiet Blackheath Cricket Ground. Not for a big fight did these thousands gather; they were there only to see “The Don” appear in their city.

The Approach: Bradman Makes His Way onto the Team

Surprisingly, the plan was for Bradman not to go in early. At number six he made his first appearance in the conference. Once his turn was up, the crowd became so excited they erupted in applause. The next part of the match impressed everyone, becoming unbeatable in cricket history.

Bill in the other partnership spot knew what to do: make room for Bradman by rotating the role of striker. After hitting a hundred off just three overs, Bradman added 10 sixes, 9 fours, as well as a lot of singles, twos and threes to his score.

Let’s take a closer look at how he was able to do this.

Over-by-Over Breakdown

Bradman immediately learned what the bowlers were throwing during the first over. Thanks to his excellent footwork and accurate hitting, Siu Ching slapped many boundaries that went high and crossed the ropes.

This over was the dearest and Bradman hit several long balls that flew over the trees and much of the nearby structures. It’s said that one ball somehow made its way into a car’s open window, an absurd but quite common story.

During the third over, Bradman didn’t score as many as last time, but he still advanced to the impressive score of 100. Even as he guided the game, he kept testing out directions and scored frequently from each delivery.

Who Was the Bowler?

There was one person Bradman repeatedly made suffer during tests, it was local bowler G.C. White. Though he could compete locally, White came across as weak once he hit top tournaments. It’s worth remembering that in 1931, bowlers had no pace variation, didn’t use protective gear and had bowling balls that were much simpler than those available today. Because of how he batted, Bradman made bowling almost useless.

Legends Without Records

No one took a film of this innings. No-one was providing live feedback, there were no cameras with the latest technology and nothing to help viewers track the ball’s movements. We only have news stories, firsthand experiences and game reports from the past. That is to say, this helps make the event even more enchanting. It continues to thrive only because each new generation of cricket supporters respects and respects it.

Bradman mentioned the innings again in later years, saying it was one of his favourite times playing cricket. Instead of using it to prove power, he showed how entertaining cricket could be.

Modern Cricket is used as a reference.

Now, let’s examine how these numbers measure up to what we see in T20 cricket now.

  • Sahil Chauhan (Estonia) hit the fastest century in a T20I match in just 27 balls, in 2024.
  • The first batsman to get a one-day century this quickly was AB de Villiers, off 31 deliveries (in 2015).
  • New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum made the Fastest Test Century in 2016, off just 54 balls.

Despite the remarkable advances, how quickly these balls were hit today can’t touch Bradman’s feat with just 24 deliveries. Besides, fast bowling, fielding rules and lighter bats are available to players now, as is focused training for T20 matches, features decades ago players did not enjoy.

Precursor to Modern Batting Power: The Case of Bradman

Bradman was not a slugger like today’s top batters. He specialised in the process above all else. But on that day in 1931, he merged force with old-style batting, proving that passionate cricket can be skillful, graceful and still efficient.

His style in matches likely inspired the strategies used in today’s ODIs, long before the game’s official birth in 1971. Scoring at a fast rate for Bradman did not make him sloppy.

Why This Event We Should Be Remembered?

Even during eras of breaking records every year, Bradman’s 100 in only 3 overs has not been matched for a number of reasons.

1. This room is a true account of the Holocaust, not a publicity gimmick. Real cricket was enjoyed by thousands, with proper umpires and match officials on hand.

2. Sir Don was recognised for matching his skills to the situation, the audience and the atmosphere of the game, something not all players can do.

3. In New South Wales, Australians still regard this innings as a moment of exceptional sporting achievement.

Facts mainly known

  • Modern researchers say that Bradman’s bat weighed much more than today’s bats, yet he handled it effortlessly.
  • The bowlers from Lithgow were of a good standard for their place, but Bradman was simply that much better.
  • The game was included in a Bush Cricket Tour organised to spread the sport across Australia’s outlying areas. Because of Bradman, smaller cricket neighbourhoods became widely recognised all across Australia.

Conclusion: A Work That Will Last For Time

We don’t just remember Bradman for his century in just three overs—it also created a unique moment in cricket. It combines skill, style and crowd engagement, decades before these factors went mainstream in performance circles.

Even though we can’t expect another 100 made in 24 balls under control, the fact that such a great man scored it gives us a guide and an example to follow.

We understand that the magic of cricket goes beyond the rules or matches; it appears when amazing talent comes into play.
